🇬🇧 Avalanches have always existed. Probably even before the first people began to settle within the Alps. However, in 1954, one of the biggest avalanche catastrophes ever to occur in the Alps, took place in Austria. The snow covered the small mountain village of Blons in Vorarlberg like a giant shroud. Every third inhabitant was buried by an avalanche and one-sixth of the population was killed. Three families were completely wiped out. Thousands of people searched for buried victims.
