Meet Bob – Bob is a Caribbean flamingo, from the island of Curaçao. His life took a dramatic turn when he flew into a hotel window, leaving him severely concussed. He was cared for by Odette, the photographer’s cousin, a local veterinarian who also runs a wildlife rehabilitation centre and conservation charity – the Fundashon Dier en Onderwijs Cariben (FDOC).
Existing disabilities meant Bob couldn’t be released, but instead he became ambassador for FDOC, which educates locals about the importance of protecting the island’s wildlife.
Flamingo Bob is an intimate love story about compassion. More specifically about how two individuals, that depend on each other, initiate positive change by educating future generations.
The world is currently at crisis, which can be seen everywhere within the natural world. And although it is easy to lose hope, we shouldn’t forget that through individual actions driven by love and empathy, we can have an enormous positive impact on the world around us. Jasper created this story to celebrate that power. Never would he have thought about doing a story about a family member, but it’s a reminder that this power lives in all of us.
The story about Bob and Odette will be published as a book in 2020, as part of a larger project to raise funds for FDOC and conservation in the Caribbean.
